The original had a big problem – extreme dullness, due to which much merged into one unpleasant one-color lump. The new version plays with completely different colors, and on all three decks (main, agricultural and entertainment) colors and lighting are different. So yes, the authors solved this problem with brilliance. Alas, they overdid it a bit with the interface, without adding some really useful features (for example, the ability to expel or arrest aliens directly from the list of all guests and workers in order to poke at each one manually). But on the other hand, they made all the interface icons much larger so that the player does not engage in pixel hunting. The original game was created by people from Bullfrog – the same authors of Dungeon Keeper and great masters of experimental games.
